I can’t believe the media is thinking that the bombings are going to temper Trump’s tone.

If anything he is going to ramp it up and make jokes about it.

Unsurprisingly, on a day when he’s been getting criticism for promoting violent rhetoric and portraying the political opposition as “the enemy,” he’s now at a rally portraying himself as the victim.

Cathay Pacific has had a gigantic data breach.

The personal data of 9.4 million passengers was leaked earlier this year, Cathay Pacific Airways and its subsidiary Hong Kong Dragon Airlines disclosed in a statement late on Wednesday night.

The city’s flagship carrier said it had discovered unauthorised access to some of the passenger data it managed and that of its wholly owned subsidiary, which operates under the Cathay Dragon brand.

The compromised data included passengers’ names, nationalities, dates of birth, telephone numbers, emails, physical addresses, passport numbers, identity card numbers, frequent flier programme membership numbers, customer service remarks and travel history.

In addition, about 860,000 passport numbers and 245,000 Hong Kong identity card numbers were accessed without authorisation.

scmp.com

Credit card information was also in the leak. The carrier says it has no evidence that the compromised data was used illegally, though.

Cathay Pacific is a “premium” airline, meaning their ticket prices are generally higher than most other carriers. IOW their customers have more disposable income and thus are prime targets for credit card and identity fraud.

The explosion is rarely the point. Consider the humble pineapple grenade: As an explosive, it is not terribly dangerous. It’s a tiny little thing when it comes to explosive power. However, it is designed exclusively to throw extremely deadly shrapnel a long way in every conceivable direction. A PVC pipe bomb laced with glass shards is, effectively, a hand grenade you can put in a mailbox. As an explosive, not so dangerous, but it’s the side effects of the explosion that are the real danger.

Not if the powder is compressed or contains an accelerator. How sure are we black powder as opposed to high velocity smokeless like shotgun load powder? Glass is deadly dangerous at relatively low velocity…

And Bob’s your uncle, folks. If you want an actual explosive, you build a truck bomb like Timothy McVeigh. If you want a weapon to kill a person, you build an improvised hand grenade.

They speculate it was made from pvc to keep the weight down so it could be mailed without the bomber having to go into the post office to mail it.

No expert moi, either; but according to most reports, the bomber was going for simplicity/light weight/low-detectability. Wanting to save on postage, too …. ////

But some folks who ARE experts will probably soon be having better answers: CBS says all six recovered bombs are bring sent to the FBI lab in Quantico for analysis.

Which brings up one interesting point: mail bombs are usually (at least AFAIK, and if the bomb-maker really knows his craft) rigged to go off upon opening: today’s guy seems to have used cheap digital clocks as timers (?) - one wonders why none of them actually did explode….

The caravan is real. It’s the size, makeup and purpose of it that have been distorted all to hell.

People from South American nations routinely make the treacherous trek to the United States in search of a peaceful and prosperous life. They’re even willing to put up with a lengthy wait for an Asylum hearing. These are not drug dealers or people entering illegally.

They are people who risked everything to get here, are will to through the process the right way and yet Trump and the GOP just shit all over them.

Rachel Maddow reported it was common fireworks explosives, so I guess that is where black powder came from.

And thinking about it more, I doubt we hear all the ingredients if like you said there was additional accelerators.

The ATF and FBI would probably keep that out of the media reporting.

The media’s adopted (officially or subconsciously) the GOP’s chief talking point: “If we don’t stop these asylum-seekers, then we have to take them all.” That it’s not a question of letting them go through the lawful process, but stopping them and denying them entry lest a single one gain entry.

The USA once again scores in the bottom half of OECD nations on the PISA — an international assessment of students’ reading, science and math skills.

The OECD conducts an assessment every three years of education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15 year old students in science, reading and mathematics (plus collaborative problem solving and financial literacy). 72 countries are evaluated, with 540,000 students put under the spotlight of a two-hour test. Our infographic below combines the median scores for each country or region in the three core test areas to show which performed to the highest overall level. With a mean score of 1,655, Singapore tops the list ahead of Hong Kong and Japan in second and third respectively. The U.S. just scraped into the top 30 with a below OECD average score (1,476) of 1,463.

Chart: Image: chartoftheday_7104_pisa_top_rated_countries_regions_2016_n.jpg

Our low ranking is nothing new. American students have consistently scored at or below the OECD average for decades, which invariably leads to much pearl-clutching and hand-waving among politicians and upper-echelon educators. Then, it’s all forgotten till the next PISA results come out. Common Core was supposed to address some of the weaknesses of US education, but from my perspective as someone teaching in one of the above-average PISA scorers, the real solution would involve a wholesale renovation of the American educational system, starting in the primary grades. And, even more impossible, getting the American public to value education — specifically math and science instruction — as necessary for the development of the nation. Considering the party in power is both innumerate and a-scientific, it’s not going to happen within this next decade.

But, Americans are so creative, right?

Statement from CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker: pic.twitter.com

This is the same game Trump played so effectively in the Kavanaugh nomination; Trump realized how compelling Dr. Ford was and, evil genius that he is, turned it against her and persuaded a large portion of this country that it wasn’t assaults on women that are a problem, it was women accusing men of assaults; men are the real victims not women.

So, in this case, it’s not Trump’s rhetoric and appeal to violence that is a problem, the problem is the media reporting or criticizing his outrageous behavior.

We have a lot of not-teacher types, meaning parents, that still minimize the usefulness of math. And it’s hard to get kids going when that happens.

There are too many primary and elementary school teachers who are math-a-phobic, and their attitudes, spoken or unspoken, affect their students’ attitudes. “Math is hard” is more than a joke. It’s an attitude that is a fundamental problem in American society. Technology has offered math education many new, creative and visual ways to convey concepts that were unavailable to people my age. But if schools can barely afford textbooks for their students, how are they going to get graphing calculators and iPads for their math classes?

I taught Algebra I to 9th graders for a year back in a private school in KY. These were not underprivileged kids by any stretch, but getting basic concepts down was a struggle. Graphing calculators and computers made the process easier, because they could see in real time how changing a coefficient changed the shape of their graph. This was back in the late ’80s/early ’90s. Tech has changed a lot since then, and probably could make the instruction even more fun and engaging.

Have you ever wondered how Ted Cruz can be both against eliminating pre-existing conditions and for eliminating pre-existing conditions?

The picture at the top was the one Ted tweeted out about his rally this morning.

The bottom was tweeted out by someone else.

Camera angles, Sen. Cruz, how do they work? Were you told there would be no math?

So it looks like Megyn Kelly is “stepping down” from her show…

[Embedded content]

Really, at this point, the only way NBC could make up for this would be to offer Tamron Hall her own show in Kelly’s time slot with a hefty salary and generous signing bonus.

The NAACP is suing Waller County, where Prairie View A&M is located:

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund, on behalf of students at the historically black college Prairie View A&M University, filed a lawsuit Monday against the Texas county where the college is located. The lawsuit challenges Waller County’s early voting plan, which the complaint says provides a relatively limited opportunity for early voting near the campus, particularly when compared to the white areas of the county.

Of the two weeks of early voting in Texas, there are only five days — none of them weekend days — that an early polling place is open in Prairie View, on or near the campus. Two of those days, the polling place is at a community center that is “off-campus and is not well-known to or frequently used by PVAMU voters, particularly because most students receive their mail on campus,” according to the complaint.

There are also no evening hours for early voting near the campus, nor is there an open polling place in Prairie View during the first week of early voting.

Comparatively, the majority-white City of Waller — which, according to the lawsuit, has half the population of eligible voters that Prairie View has— will offer early voting both weeks, including on Saturdays and during some evenings, and has two voting sites. Another majority white city in the same county as Prairie View is also offering early voting during the first week, according to the lawsuit.

The county made up some bullshit arguments about why they couldn’t accommodate the students.

Personally, I can’t help but think that there are a lot of wingnuts across the country tonight who are not shocked and dismayed that this happened…but rather bummed out that none of the bombs went off before being discovered.

There are too many primary and elementary school teachers who are math-a-phobic, and their attitudes, spoken or unspoken, affect their students’ attitudes. “Math is hard” is more than a joke. It’s an attitude that is a fundamental problem in American society. ….

As much as I enjoyed Peggy Sue Got Married, I hated the movie message that she knew she was never going to need the math in the class she was taking. This aversion to math and science is an old problem — it was during my childhood (in my case, math was always my favorite subject) decades ago and it remains so today.

I actually saw someone post that on Facebook today.

Part of the reason I don’t hang out on Facebook any more.

I will admit that I was mathophobic in high school, but I was challenged by it and went on to earn a bachelor of science in Mathematics.

The county made up some bullshit arguments about why they couldn’t accommodate the students.

Same arguments other GOP controlled areas with minority voter populations did (such as Dodge City). Sudden construction in front of the polling place, claims the ACA prohibits them from using it. (The ACA does not prohibit that, it is a lie, all that is required is reasonable accommodation, such as sending a poll worker out with a ballot).

Trolls are claiming the bombs aren’t real, therefore it was either a) false flag, b) not a crime, c) who does it benefit the most?

From nbcnews.com:

The “Get ‘Er Done” flag was originally created in 2014 by the right-wing parody site World News Bureau, for an article titled “ISIS Vows Retribution For Counterfeit Flags.” It has since been shared as a meme on right-wing websites and forums.

World News Bureau is run by a man claiming to be from Scottsdale, Arizona who goes by the name Scooter Van Neuter and also runs the parody news site bighairynews.com. Van Neuter is a frequent commenter on right-wing websites like Breitbart and The Daily Caller, and his account was permanently suspended from Twitter in 2017.

National Security Pros, It’s Time to Talk About Right-Wing Extremism (Defense One, more at the link):

We have been too quiet about a threat that is regularly killing our fellow citizens.

Ask any of us who works in national security what to do about ISIS, and we’d have no problem pitching you ideas. Even if we lack expertise in the topic or don’t work directly on it, we’d still have opinions and thoughts, because we’ve been swimming in a sea of articles, op-eds, books, hearings, programs, and overall research and debate for years. But ask us about right-wing extremism, a violent ideology that’s killed more Americans than ISIS in the last decade, and most of us would pause — either because we were unaware of the problem or, worse, we were afraid to speak openly about it.

So let’s talk about it now.

Over the last decade, individuals and groups fueled by this virulent ideology have committed 71 percent of the known politically or religiously inspired killings in our country — that is, 274 of the 387 Americans murdered by extremists. Reports now indicate it was part of the recent murder of 17 school children and teachers in Florida, just as it was part of mass shootings that have happened everywhere from California to Charleston. It has not just hit inside the US, but has struck many of our closest allies, both causing near-tragedies and horrible massacres. It is not a new threat; it has killed hundreds of Americans in past decades. But it is growing in power and influence, worrisomely being stoked by foreign nations like Russia that wish our nation harm. It is a clear, present, and proven danger to the United States. Yet we find it awkward to talk about.

And made of PVC pipe. Sounds a pretty cheap way to go.

I’m not an explosives expert, but wouldn’t PVC give up too easily with the expansion of the charge and not cause as big an explosion?

presumably an attempt to get it through automated security. metal pipes presumably would set off stuff.
